Indonesia and New Zealand Expand Cooperation in the Livestock Sector

Sabtu, November 08, 2025

Star News INDONESIASaturday, (08 November 2025). JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is opening up opportunities for broader cooperation with New Zealand in the livestock sector, including collaboration related to Meat and Bone Meal (MBM) and animal health.

This was conveyed during a meeting between the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) and New Zealand representatives in Jakarta on Thursday (6/11/2025).

New Zealand has long been one of Indonesia’s main suppliers of MBM, which is used as raw material for animal feed.

The import of MBM is strictly regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Trade, with a focus on animal health, product safety, and compliance with international standards.

“We want to understand the same perspective regarding your country’s system. We need more information concerning the sustainability of MBM cooperation,” said Giselle Larcombe, Deputy Ambassador of New Zealand to Indonesia.

Nuryani Zainuddin, Secretary of the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health, welcomed the opportunity for broader cooperation, not only related to MBM but also in the livestock and animal health sectors.

Nuryani also highlighted the need for policies that could ease New Zealand’s regulations requiring livestock shipments by air.

Giselle Larcombe stated that the New Zealand government is proposing more flexible regulations, including the potential lifting of the ban on livestock exports via sea.

The plan is still in the consultation phase with relevant ministries and will be brought to parliament.

This expanded cooperation is seen as mutually beneficial. For Indonesia, it supports a higher-quality animal feed industry, while for New Zealand, it strengthens its agribusiness sector in international markets.

“Please submit a detailed cooperation proposal. We are ready to support broader collaboration,” added Nuryani.

With these discussions, Indonesia and New Zealand are increasingly opening opportunities for strategic collaboration that go beyond MBM trade, encompassing the overall development of the livestock and animal health sectors.
