Star News INDONESIASaturday, (26 April 2025). JAKARTA - President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening its cooperation with the Republic of Fiji. This statement was made during a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, held at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

In his opening remarks, President Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia and Fiji have enjoyed positive relations, especially since the official establishment of diplomatic ties. He also underlined the importance of solidarity among Pacific nations.

“As countries in the Pacific region, we share common interests and face similar challenges — from climate issues and rising sea levels to the dynamics of international geopolitics,” said the President.

President Prabowo also affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to the principles of sovereignty, peace, and international cooperation. He stated that Indonesia remains firmly committed to a non-aligned policy and believes in collaboration and partnership, particularly in the fields of economy and trade.

“We believe the world is becoming increasingly interconnected. What happens in one part of the world can affect all others. Therefore, it is crucial for us to work together to maintain harmonious relations,” he explained.

Furthermore, the President expressed his intention to enhance cooperation with Fiji in the area of economic development. This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s current agenda of economic transformation.

“The Indonesian government is currently undertaking a broad economic transformation program, one of which includes strengthening the agricultural sector to achieve food self-sufficiency,” he stated.

The Head of State also highlighted the significant progress Indonesia has made in developing superior crop varieties, including soybeans, wheat, and rice. He extended an invitation to Fijian youth to learn from Indonesia’s experience in tropical agriculture.

“We now have the technology and best practices to convert swamplands into productive agricultural areas. This is a field that could benefit young people from Fiji, should they wish to come to Indonesia to study,” he said.

President Prabowo noted that Fiji is Indonesia’s fourth-largest trading partner in the Oceania region. Indonesia, he said, remains committed to enhancing this partnership.

“We greatly appreciate your leadership in the Pacific Islands Forum, and we highly value your support for Indonesia’s participation in the Forum,” he concluded.
