Star News INDONESIA, Sunday, (15 June 2025). JAKARTA - For years, we’ve been captivated by imported “superfoods” like quinoa, chia seeds, and kale. But often, we overlook the rich nutritional treasures growing right in our own backyard.
One such hidden gem is the moringa leaf. Across many regions in Indonesia, moringa is often seen as a humble village food. Yet scientifically, moringa contains seven times more vitamin C than oranges and four times more calcium than milk.
It’s also packed with iron, magnesium, and powerful antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals. Moringa leaves have natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties as well.
Modern medicine is starting to take notice—studies are exploring moringa’s potential in treating diabetes and even cancer. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has dubbed it the “miracle tree” for its remarkable health benefits.
And it doesn’t stop at the leaves. Moringa seeds can purify water, while its roots, stems, and flowers are used in traditional herbal remedies.
What’s more, moringa is easy to grow, fast-growing, and can be harvested year-round—making it an ideal, sustainable solution for improving nutrition in rural communities.
Compared to kale—which is expensive and often imported—moringa offers an affordable, nutrient-dense, and eco-friendly alternative.
Maybe it’s time we stop idolizing foreign health trends. It’s time for moringa to rise as Indonesia’s own iconic superfood—a symbol of our local wisdom and health resilience.
