JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo emphasized the important role of religious and community leaders in creating peace, harmony and togetherness in a country, region and the world. This was conveyed by the President in his remarks when opening the R20 International Summit of Religious Authorities (ISORA) which was held at the Park Hyatt Hotel, Jakarta, on Monday, November 27 2023.
"This will not be able to be realized if it is not supported by religious teachings, it will not be able to be realized if it is not supported by religious leaders, who teach that love for one's country is part of faith, tolerance for differences is part of faith, and protecting "Unity is also part of faith," said the President.
The Head of State regretted the open wars and massacres that still occur in the modern world. The President also emphasized that all humanitarian assistance and peace negotiations must be carried out immediately.
“Tragedi kemanusiaan di Palestina tidak bisa ditoleransi sedikit pun. Gencatan senjata harus segera dilakukan, bantuan kemanusiaan harus dipercepat, dan perundingan damai harus dimulai,” tuturnya.
“The humanitarian tragedy in Palestine cannot be tolerated in the slightest. "A ceasefire must be implemented immediately, humanitarian assistance must be accelerated, and peace negotiations must begin," he said.
"It is not an easy thing to unite, but we can and we are grateful that Indonesia is able to erode tribal egos, able to erode religious egos, able to erode regional egos, so that it is able to realize Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, unity in diversity," said the President.
Furthermore, President Jokowi appreciated the implementation of R20 in the context of forming cross-religious and national dialogue in ending disputes and creating a peaceful and prosperous world.
"I really appreciate the holding of this forum, let us create inter-religious and cross-national dialogue to bridge differences and stop all forms of conflict so that we can create a peaceful world, a harmonious world, a prosperous world together," said the President.
Also accompanying the President on this occasion were Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Director of the World Muslim League for Indonesia and ASEAN Abdurrahman Al-Khayyat, General Chair of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board Yahya Cholil Staquf, Katib Aam PBNU K.H. Ahmad Said Asrori, and Acting. Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono.
